Where is Lake Texoma?
Lake Texoma straddles a portion of the eastern border between Texas and Oklahoma, hence its name. With a surface area of 36,000 ha (89,000 acres) and a water volume of over 3 billion cubic metes, it is one of the largest reservoirs in the country. It is located approximately 120 km (75 miles) north of Dallas, or 190 km (121 miles) south of Oklahoma City.
Denison Dam and Lake Texoma
Actually a man-made lake, Texoma resulted from the construction of the Denison Dam in August 1939 by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), a year after it was authorized by the Flood Control Act of 28 June 1938. Apart from controlling flood waters in the area, the dam also generates 250,000-megawatt hours of hydroelectric power per year, and provides 154 million cubic meters of water for local communities.
It is fed primarily by the Red River (sometimes called the Red River of the South) and Washita River, and empties back into the Red as it continues its journey to the Mississippi and Atchafalaya Rivers.
Lake Texoma is a huge area that presents opportunities for recreation and interaction with nature. Indeed, it is host to two wildlife refuges, 56 parks, two of which are state-owned and managed while the rest are run by the USACE, 26 resorts, and countless campgrounds and several golf courses.
Lake Texoma Water Recreation
The lake is considered as an excellent fishing ground having been stocked with black bass, white bass native to the Red and Washita Rivers, and black and white crappie. Other types of game and non-game fish also abound in the lake.
Water sports are a staple. You can go power boating, sailing, water skiing or wakeboarding, and wind surfing on the lake’s waters.
Lake Texoma Land Recreation
Among the 58 parks are the Eisenhower State Park located in Grayson County, Texas. It is named after President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a native of Denison City which is within the county.
Eisenhower State Park offers nature programs – nature study, wildlife observation, biking, hiking, camping, picnicking, and ATV use. There are plenty of varieties of trees as well as animals within the park that freely mingle with the people. There is also a campground pavilion, recreation hall, and amphitheater for group activities. Water sports are also available.
