Bird Watching at Lake Texoma

December 27, 2010 by Homesbylainie

Many people that live near Lake Texoma enjoy bird watching – we are fortunate to have Hagerman Wildlife Refuge- which consists of approximately12,000 acres –3,000 acres of marsh and water and 8,000 acres of upland and farmland.

Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1946 as an overlay of a portion of the Big Mineral arm of Lake Texoma. Consisting of about 12,000 acres, the Refuge provides a variety of habitats for birds and wildlife. Canada, snow, white-fronted, and Ross’ geese along with pintail, mallard, gadwall and other ducks use refuge impoundments and fields as stop-over and wintering grounds. White pelicans by the thousands can be seen here during their spring and fall migrations. Deer, turkeys, bobcats, hawks, and songbirds are abundant.

Many recreational opportunities are offered at the Refuge.  Bird and wildlife observation, an auto tour, hiking trails, fishing, hunting, boating, and paddling are examples of available activities.

Visit the Hagerman Wildlife site

Another great site jam packed with information about bird watching and Hagerman Wildlife is the Friends of Hagerman – here you’ll find info on their programs, activities, newsletters and ways to volunteer.

While Hagerman is the number one spot for bird watching – there are other places at Lake Texoma that offer amazing views as well as bird watching opportunities.  Check out this person’s view on birdwatching on the Preston Peninsula.

Another area that I had never even considered as a great birdwatching area is the Russwood area.  I sold a house to a now wonderful friend and she has amazing views of the eagles that gracefully glide through the air.  What a wonderful surprise – so now not only does Russwood boast some of the most beautiful homes with lakeviews – you can also enjoy some of God’s most graceful creatures alongside those views!  Currently the only properties available in this exclusive area are these lots – check them out – great chance to build that dream home overlooking the lake!  Contact me for a list of reputable builders in our area.
